Apply the Aggie Brand Theme
The Aggie Brand Theme is a JSON file that transforms a default Power BI report into a TAMU-branded report. It sets colors, fonts, visual defaults, and accessibility-compliant contrast ratios in one step.
What the Theme Changes
| Category | Before (Default) | After (Aggie Brand) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary color | Blue (#4472C4) | Maroon (#500000) |
| Accent colors | Default palette | Gold, Cream, Rougue, Olive, Cobalt |
| Heading font | Segoe UI | Work Sans |
| Body font | Segoe UI | Open Sans |
| Card backgrounds | White | White (light) / Dark surface (dark) |
| Grid lines | Gray | Subtle gray matching AggieUX tokens |
| Table headers | Blue | Maroon with white text |
| Contrast | Varies | WCAG 2.2 AA compliant at minimum |
How to Apply
- Download
aggie-brand-theme.jsonfrom the Aggie Brand Theme documentation - Open your report in Power BI Desktop
- Go to View → Themes → Browse for themes
- Select the JSON file
- Click Open — all visuals update immediately
The theme is saved inside the report file. You only apply it once.
Verifying Contrast
After applying the theme, spot-check your visuals:
- Text on white background: Maroon (#500000) on white = 15.4:1 contrast ratio (exceeds AAA)
- Text on maroon background: White (#FFFFFF) on maroon = 15.4:1 (exceeds AAA)
- Gold accent on white: Gold (#AF8846) on white = 3.8:1 (use for decorative elements only, not body text)
- Chart data colors: All palette colors meet AA against white background
The TAMU Gold (#AF8846) does not meet WCAG AA contrast requirements for body text on white backgrounds (3.8:1, needs 4.5:1). Use it for borders, accents, and decoration — never for text that conveys essential information.
Light and Dark Mode
The theme includes both light and dark mode palettes. Dark mode is controlled by a Theme Slicer in AggieViz reports or via the Power BI service's built-in dark mode setting.
For details on implementing theme-responsive visuals, see Light & Dark Mode.
